Ouimet140207d004For professionals interested in tapping into the power of mapping, you've come to the right place. The Geography Department at the University of Connecticut (UConn), one of the pioneers in Geographic Information Science (GIScience), began offering a classroom-based GIS graduate certificate program in 1988, then added an online offering in 2013.

Today, our certificate program offers a focused set of four 3-credit graduate-level courses that concentrate on the science behind the development and use of geospatial technologies. The certificate, available fully online or as a combination of online and on-campus classroom instruction (blended), can be completed in one year by taking two courses in the fall and two in the spring. You can also spread out courses over two or three years if that works better for you.

Consider this program if:

  • You've taken advantage of GIS software sometime in the past, but are looking to get back up to speed.
  • You have little or no experience in GIS, but want to get into this dynamic field—without having to commit to a Master's or PhD degree.
  • You're in graduate school now and want to develop expertise in GIS to complement your work in such other disciplines as natural and social sciences, engineering, public policy, and education.
  • You're well established in an unrelated career, but are looking to transition into GIScience.

Choose fully online – or blended

The online or blended GIS Graduate Certificate provides high quality UConn instruction—including several courses taught by long-time GIS experts—combined with the flexibility and convenience of online learning. Or if you work near our Storrs Campus or are enrolled in one of our Master's or PhD programs, you can earn a blended certificate that includes both online GIS classes and in-class instruction. For UConn graduate students, admission into the certificate program is streamlined, and the admissions fee is waived. Contact Rich Mrozinski at mrozinski@uconn.edu if you need assistance.

All credits earned in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Online Graduate Certificate may be transferable to UConn’s Master’s of Energy and Environmental Management.
